You don’t have to be a homeowner or long-term resident to sponsor a tree. We met with Bow resident Joseph to learn about his tree sponsorship.

A street with no trees

When we met Joseph, he told us that the end of the street that he lived on didn’t have any trees. Joseph could see how much nicer the end with the trees was and wanted to do something about it.

As soon as he heard about the Trees for Streets scheme via a leaflet that came through the door, he wanted to get involved.

Re-greening the area

Joseph is originally from France and has been living in London for four years. He works in sustainable finance and has a great understanding and appreciation for nature.

He said that planting trees to absorb carbon is so crucial to the health of the planet, especially in inner city areas where there are so many cars.

Joseph lives in a shared house which has a small back garden patio that benefits from the shade of nearby treesHe thinks that sponsoring a tree to make the area greener is a great use of his money!

Doing his bit for the neighbourhood

A sturdy pear tree was planted outside Joseph’s house back in April 2022. He was concerned that it seemed to be a bit stressed with the hot temperatures over the summer but knows that in a few years it will provide shade, absorb pollution and help make the area better.

He hopes that the neighbours enjoy the tree and that they will benefit from it too.

Seeing the benefits

Joseph is really happy with his tree sponsoring experience.

Trees for Streets is a really great initiative, so I hope that lots of other people are inspired to get involved.

Sometimes when you donate to a charity or project it’s hard to see exactly what you’re contributing to, but this is very tangible. It’s right there in the street outside, I can see it every day and it feels good to have done this.

Trees do so much for us

The benefits that trees bring to urban areas are amazing.

They help us by:

  • Improving our mental and physical health
  • Absorbing air pollution
  • Protecting from flooding
  • Encouraging calm and careful driving
  • Reducing littering and fly-tipping
  • Making our neighbourhoods that bit nicer
